Mother Africa

While the bonds of slavery erased many of the details and stories that our family came from, we have had our African ancestry traced to know our countries of origin.

American Slavery

Peter Lewis and his parents gained their surname from their owners during slavery, John South Lewis of Woodville Mississippi. The white Lewis family at one time had a plantation home, where many of our family members would have been born and endured the years of slavery, however this house no longer stands. In the mid 1800’s the Lewis family purchased “Oaklawn” an existing home closer in town, which still stands today.
